Washington, DC – Project Nur, along with its parent organization the American Islamic Congress, is collaborating with the Sudanese community and Tents of Hope in organizing a vigil to be held in front of the Embassy of the Republic of Sudan (2210 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, DC) from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 7, 2008. The vigil unites Sudanese and Americans around one clear purpose: bring justice and peace to Darfur. The vigil is part of the historic “Gathering of the Tents” weekend organized for Darfur from November 7-9, 2008 (www.TentsofHope.org).
The Sudanese and American communities will come together at the vigil to say “enough” to the attacks on Darfuri people in their villages, towns, and in the camps and will demand an end to the ineffective international peace efforts that have done little to abate these attacks. “I am astonished by the lack of involvement from the greater Muslim community, both domestically and internationally, to stop the genocide happening in Darfur while Muslims are beating, raping, killing, and demoralizing other Muslims,” said Shabana Stationwala, Project Nur Director, American Islamic Congress. “We at Project Nur and the AIC are building bridges both within the American Muslim community and between American Muslims and the larger US community as we join together as citizens of the human race with the Sudanese community, Tents of Hope, and various other organizations to empower the voices of the Darfuris so that their pleas for help resound in the ears of the international community.”
Project Nur (www.projectnur.org) is a "new light on campus" that creates a distinct and alternative Muslim voice: a civic identity grounded in pluralism and moderate thinking and action, one that dispels the perception of a monolithic Muslim voice. It emphasizes civic action with the goal of forging a cohesive and mutually respectful multicultural community of university students who are committed towards the advancement of human rights, civil rights, social justice, tolerance, understanding, and coexistence. Project Nur is a student-led initiative of the American Islamic Congress.
The American Islamic Congress (www.aicongress.org) is a civil-rights organization promoting tolerance and the exchange of ideas among Muslims and between other peoples. With the motto “Passionate about Moderation,” the organization leads initiatives around the world and has offices in Washington, Boston, Egypt and Iraq.
Additional sponsors of the event include: Damanga Coalition, Darfur Alert Coalition, Darfur Peace & Development Fund, Stop Genocide Now, Group Against Torture in Sudan, Darfur Peoples Association - NYC, Pittsburgh Emergency Coalition for Darfur, W.MA Coalition, and many others.
