Sade Hill, from Texas A&M, represented Project Nur at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Community Engagement Roundtable. The subject matter surrounding the roundtable focused on active shooting procedures, operations, and media rhetoric after the tragedy. Officials from the DHS presented on ways that community activists can inform the community about how to respond to an active shooting situation. Greater Houston area officials spoke about their new initiatives to provide emergency response outlets in multiple languages for the growing diverse population, while attempting to diversify law enforcement to better suit the communities. Attendees were given the opportunity to ask local and federal officials about how to respond to hate crimes and young children who are being radicalized. Sade writes, “Considering this was my first time attending an event of this magnitude, I absorbed a lot of great information, tips, and program ideas to bring back to my campus.”
